OVERVIEW

The main challenge in renovating an apartment in the Apthorp, one of the classic Upper West Side apartment buildings by renowned firm Clinton and Russell, was how to bring clean modern aesthetics to a building with such an opulent history. Neukomm responded by using a great deal of restraint in detailing the space while trying to stay true to the original character of the building. Luxurious materials and textures were deployed to bring life as well a sense of sobriety, prominence, and gravitas.

In rethinking old versus new, and in keeping with the demands of the modern couple in NYC, elements were retained such as the mosaic pattern at the entry in an idiom more closely aligned with the aesthetics of the project. The kitchen has generous views framed by a very clean and light palette with custom details. The study is a luxurious warm space with ample room to host small gatherings. Particular attention was paid to lighting details in bookcases and cabinetry, creating an inviting and refined environment to inhabit.
